Lucia and I discuss one of her photos from our very different points of view: Lucia the photographer and me the presentation developer and designer.

WIndow set up outside with no functionality. Beyond it are trees and a farm structure on the right. It's a thought-provoking art installation.

Susan says:

I know where Lucia took this photo because it is a spot she has returned to over and over. Here we are at the Draper Girls orchard. And yes the place is run by women. They grow everything that Oregon will sustain in the fruit line. My favorites are their apples, but they grow every manner of fruit on their trees. It’s You Pick Peaches time right now. But they also have an affection for odd-ball art(ish) installations like the one Lucia captured here.

The Unnecessary Window

This solo window frame and corrugated roof, like most art, serves no practical purpose other than to make you pause and ponder. This window isn’t in the slightest little bit necessary in this orchard where wide open vistas call your attention. I love this bit of whimsy that poses questions about seeing, framing, and perspective. One of those Draper girls has a rocking sense of humor.

I’d use this photo in a presentation to discuss new ways of looking or using structure to guide what is seen, and maybe even to explain where to find a tasty apple.

Lucia says:
When is a window not a window?

The Draper Girls come to our local Farmers’ Market with the best peaches, nectarines, cherries, and in the fall, apples to die for. Sometimes I travel out to there place on the east side of Mt. Hood. It’s a quiet place full of whimsical curiosities. This window is a perfect example of their sense of humor. Every time I see this installation, it makes me ponder how the window has no functionality. It’s just there. Yet, It throws me off a bit. I start to think about the difference between seeing the big picture as opposed to just a section of it. You know, it can become very Zen. Or it can just be a window out of place.

There’s a lot more to see at the Draper Girls Country Farm. If you’re out on the east side of MT. Hood, take the time to pop in. By the way, the best attractions are the goats, usually baby goats. I’ve spent quite a bit of time just watching their antics. Very entertaining.
