Susan says, “Wood, metal, glass and stone work together to create a complementary whole. The heaviness of the stone is contrasted with the shaped surface that has been carved into it. While the curving, delicate ironwork hinges on the door contrast with the warm vertical planes of the wood. The warm, flat yellow glass rectangles are set off by the tan grey irregularly textured stone work. Fragility of glass, strength and permanence of stone, warmth of wood, the intricacy of the metal work, all work together to create a image with a depth of meaning.”

Lucia says, “There were many ways to approach this scene. I could have created a close up of the lamp on the wall or framed a wide shot to create a street scene with trees and all. But I decided to make this photo about lines and texture. The rough horizontal lines of the stone wall and the smooth verticals of the wooded door create an interesting juxtaposition. The side-by-side textures of the rough stone and the smooth wood add some appeal by creating a compelling tension. The ornate hinges add a nice accent to the whole scene. They tie in with the iron lamp housing to create a virtual triangle. I believe my original impetus for framing this photo gave Susan a strong basis to expand on it to show how the many elements work together to create a cohesive whole.”
