What’s the first question that springs to your mind about this picture?
Susan says, “This image reeks of sadness: sorrow for whosever circumstances led them to live here in squalor. The soggy mattress. The scattered boxes full of stuff. The aluminum rowboat with oars still attached. The several half-hearted attempts at building a shelter. It looks like someone tried to live here, but gave up in despair. This images also makes me angry at the destruction of a beautiful spot. Even the thick, riverside greenery can’t hide the fact that nature has been given a thorough thrashing here.”
Lucia says, “I remember the day I took this photo. I was on a bike ride along the river enjoying the beautiful scenery. Then I came upon this dumpsite. At least, that’s what it looked like to me: an illegal dumping ground for garbage. Although the place was probably hidden from the road, I could see it clearly across the slough. And every time I looked at this photo, I was upset at the willfulness of people who pollute. It wasn’t until I read Susan’s description that I realized that I was probably looking at a homeless encampment. My anger changed to empathy and wonder at the resilience of people trying to create a home wherever they can. It’s amazing how another person’s viewpoint can change everything.”
