Strange as it may seem this photo has the potential to bring many abstract ideas to life.
Susan says, “Sea lions. From the human vantage point they are fat, unlikely, lumpy and loud. But from a presenter’s perspective they can be a useful starting point for a discussion of an abstract idea. For example, sea lions may look fat and lumpy, but they can move those sleek bodies quickly in the right medium so their looks can be deceiving. So it’s important to understand purpose before judging looks. Or for example, sea lions may appear to be cute little harmless cuddlers, but when annoyed or aroused they can be unpredictably vicious. Therefore making assumptions about the state of mind of another can be foolhardy even deadly. Many more ideas wait for discovery in this heap of sea lions.”
Lucia says, “These are good abstract ideas for discussion from Susan. Now, let’s step back a little and look at this from the perspective of abstract visuals. You might say, ‘it’s obviously a photo of sea lions on a wharf’. Look again and imagine if this photo were a little blurrier. The frame is filled with curves, lines, circles, and ripples. It’s all in how you perceive something, isn’t it? Is it an image of sea animals or shapes? You can have a discussion on perception and how either is correct. And you can go further and discuss abstract ideas as Susan has suggested. However you look at it, you’ll have the basis for a rip-roaring discussion.”
