Behold the iconic pay phone! So convenient for the many pedestrians on such a residential street.
Susan says, “Back to the Future! Or Forward to the Past. I’m not sure of the backstory of this pay phone, but Golly! it would surely come in handy if you were out doing what? Weeding? Handy, too, for the homeowners in the house behind if, what? Their iPhone wasn’t charged? I can see so many possible reactions to this quirky pay phone photo if it were used as an opening slide in a presentation. Because of its odd juxtaposition to grass, dirt and weed blocking plastic, it provides terrific way to make friends with your audience by making them laugh. Nostalgia, unforgettable icons and humor are hot buttons. I for sure would use this pay phone to talk about my admiration for Perry Mason and his love affair with pay phones. Are there are any Perry Mason fans in the house? As I recall if it were not for pay phones, Perry Mason episodes would have run 15 minutes max. If the storyline was thin, as many were, the writers could always stretch it out with pay phones. Our man Perry was always looking for, running to, parking to use, putting money into or dialing a pay phone. Wouldn’t Perry have found this phone very handy if he was following a suspect in a weedy back alley and needed to talk to Della Street or Paul Drake. Wonder how much it would cost him to call from a pay phone these days?”
Lucia says, “On this phone it’s written in bold, official looking letters ‘Calls $0.00’. A neighbor with a sense of humor took the time to build a wooden housing and plant a post for this display at the edge of their front yard. I’m sure many people walk by and chuckle, as I did. I even picked up the receiver – couldn’t resist. If I had been walking with someone, we probably would have had a laugh together and talked about the thoughts flying around in our heads. I agree with Susan, this is a great conversation piece.”
