Here’s what an old pair of shoes evoked for Lucia and Susan.  For you?

stories_25Lucia says: “A homeless person, a man of few possessions, receives a new pair of shoes. He’s thrilled. He even takes a few hops to try them out. Now, what to do with his old pair? They have served him well. He is very fond of them. He can’t just toss them in the trash. As a sign that he’s finished with them, he carefully places his old shoes on top of the trashcan, in the hopes that someone else will find them useful.”

Susan says: “These shoes have walked some hard miles before they were discarded. You can see that the previous owner never stopped to tie or untie them, but shoved his feet into them and kicked them off quickly, like slippers. The toes are scuffed. The soles are worn. Are those paint spatters? Several stories ideas come to mind. Take care before you judge:  “walk a mile in my shoes”. Or the nature of belief and hope: “just put one foot in front of the other”. But those both feel too obvious and hackneyed. Mostly it is interesting to contemplate the downward spiral these shoes have travelled from original owner, to their current state waiting for someone even more needy who will find them a temporary solution to a problem.”
