Lucia says: “Maybe they met on the street. Or maybe they fell on hard time together. Or they could have just gotten fed up with debt and walked away from everything. No matter how they got here, they have created a home. They even have a cat and a dog in their makeshift shelter.”
Susan says: “This is a tough one for me, especially at this time of year. Portland is dark, cold and rainy now and I wonder if what was working for this couple when the photo was taken still is. Images like this one fill me with fear. Fear for the couple and fear for all of us who are once removed from a situation like this. How easily we, any of us, could be wiped out financially and left to fend for ourselves. The safety nets are slender and few in this country – or anywhere in the world. I count my blessings, cross my fingers and keep moving.”
