Lucia says: “Ok, here’s the story of a brief encounter. I saw him walking ahead of me at a street fair. I loved the way his sitar laid across his back, so I made a photo. Several hours later, I met him at a bus stop. We struck up a conversation while we waited for the bus. We talked of the music we each heard while walking around the fair. He told me of his love for sitar music and how his quest to find a teacher brought him to India. I showed him the photo I took earlier. He thought it was “cool” and asked for a copy. I told him I liked the sticker on his sitar case. He said it was his philosophy of life. Hmmm, I thought. “no violence against women,” “heal the planet,” “music keeps me sane,” good thinking.”
Susan says: “How can I disagree with Lucia? But, of course, I do. Here is a photo that tells the story of a musician who plays the sitar, the instrument of India and the Beatles. This photo doesn’t show us the sitar, a beautiful and complex instrument played while sitting on the floor, but rather shows us the instrument all boxed up in a case covered with a mess of Anglo sentiments on stickers. It is an interesting juxtaposition of the idea of the long, long complex and ancient ragas played on the instrument and the commonplace aphorisms on the case.”
