Lucia says: “This is a story of tenacity. The boy decided he wanted to send a long log down the rapids. He had to fight the river’s current to get the log lined up to send it on its journey. Here we see him seconds after his success. He’s still fighting the current to stay standing. But we know he’ll be fine, because he has determination.”
Susan says: “I come to this photo without knowledge of what happened before Lucia snapped the shutter. I have only the moment itself. What I see here is a boy standing in the ruffles and white water of a stream. The calm water is behind him and he is moving forward into deeper, darker water. He points to something just beyond the frame of the picture. Is something being swept away? Is he trying to catch it? Is there danger? To me this photo is unsettling and unclear. Be careful there, boy.”
