The lighting of the setting sun on the colorful kayaks was what first attracted me to this scene. I composed it so the bright colors were small subjects in a large, gray negative space. Afterwards I noticed much more. A closer look revealed subtle pastels permeating throughout the gray surrounding the kayaks. The textures in the negative space make it even more interesting changing from very bumpy at the top to fairly flat at the bottom. This gradual shift from rough to smooth is interrupted by yet another texture in the wake of the kayaks. And here I thought I was capturing a simple scene of nicely lit colorful kayaks on the water.
