Amazing mathematics. The power of the circle and the spiral to captivate. It’s all in how you look at it.
Susan says, “This photo represents the beauty of mathematics. A perfectly portioned circle tilted just slightly off center so that the circle becomes an oval, and becomes an illusion of both height and depth. Are we looking up or are we looking down? It’s nearly impossible to tell. (Hint look at the handrail.) The beauty of the contrasting marble and brass, the pattern of the steps and the vertical railings, and the glorious top and side lighting all make for a wondrous design. What is especially interesting about this architectural design is that it changes as the viewer chooses how to look at it. Perspective. A difficult concept to capture in a presentation, done here, perfectly.”
Lucia says, “I think Susan has covered this very well. All I have to add is how you look at this photo will determine if you see it as the circle coming toward you or moving away from you. Since I created this photo by leaning over a railing in a vertigo producing position and shooting upward, I know what is what. Nonetheless, my eyes can play games with me. I can make myself see the circle coming toward me when I know it is actually moving away. Which goes to show that a photo like this could provoke a discussion about the power of the mind to interpret what we see.”
