This photo captures the abstract notion of looking in a very complex fashion. Plus it’s a whole lotta fun too.
Susan says, “Let’s just think about this one for a minute. Here we have a photograph of a telescope. An instrument for bringing us closer to objects far away. Or maybe bringing objects far away closer to us. We are looking at the telescope through the lens of a camera. An instrument for capturing objects to look at later. There is a haze over the image of the telescope caused by the photographer’s reflection in the glass that keeps the telescope free from sticky, prying fingers. The photographer is seeing the telescope. We are seeing the telescope and the photographer’s ghostly presence. The telescope is seeing nothing, but did once. I don’t know much about quantum mechanics, but is that Schrödinger’s cat in the background?”
Lucia says, “Schrödinger’s cat? Maybe, maybe not. Is Susan over analyzing? On one level it’s pretty simple. This scene caught my eye and I did my best to capture it. But, in Susan’s defense, I can go on to say the photo does look mysterious. The reflection on the glass creates a dreamlike effect surrounding the antique telescope. Well…. I have to add, this photo has captured my imagination and plays with my mind’s eye to make me think of history or, better yet, ‘time travel’.”
