This photo contains many enticing design elements. It is a veritable web of layers. We look through one window layer at and into another. And still a third layer – the reflections in the windows of the trees – adds yet another layer that is neither foreground nor background but a kind of foreground/background. The strong black frames of the windows in the foreground create an emphatic grid that anchors the background at the same time as it heightens the contrast dramatically. The parallel and angular lines and planes created by the foreground window add to the complexity of this very intricate photo by creating a perspective that shifts and changes with each viewing. Yet the photo is always in balance, too, which isn’t easy to achieve with so much action. The color palette of this photo is very sophisticated: black, lavender, red and yellow. It is especially clear here in this photograph we’ve moved from simple to complex, from flat to deep, and from bland to contrasted. Lots of lessons here.
