What comes to your mind when you look at this photo?
Susan says, “This photo has it all: the power of color, texture, balance, shape and rhythm pulled together in one simple image. First, the colors work perfectly together: deep purple offset against pure white and the black of the hinge contrasting sharply with the butter yellow of the door. The textures of wood, stucco and metal subtly affect the colors and sharpen the interest. The balance and rhythm of the three vertical planes interrupted by the horizontal door hinge makes it possible for the yellow panel to be slightly larger than the others without upsetting the harmony. The intricate shape of the hinge is perfectly juxtaposed against the hard straight lines of the door, the frame and the wall. Just all together a perfect image. Does this photo have a powerful effect on you, too?”
Lucia says, “When creating this photo, I was first drawn to the whole door. I made several attempts at capturing the scene. But something wasn’t working. Then I realized I was trying to include too much. By zeroing in on this small section I got rid of distractions allowing me to create a simple photo of geometric shapes with a compelling color palette. I feel the close-up creates a powerful image – one that lets your imagination loose. All of this proving that often less is more.”
