This photo reveals a lot about the power of design. Here Lucia has played with the elements of design – balance, color, texture to give this photo clout. Let’s explore.

Susan says, “Balance isn’t necessarily about perfect symmetry or blind lady justice with her scales. Balance can be played with for effect. Here the large mound of grass seems to overpower the little girl walking on the beach. Is the photo out of balance? Maybe not. If you look further, because she is wearing a bright pink sweater and carrying a red bucket, she holds her own. The airy texture of the grass is contrasted by her solid little form, again giving her more weight in the photo. But to be sure she is dwarfed by both the grass and the sea beyond her. And as she walks she will soon disappear behind the grass and be gone. The fragility of this little girl is what’s at issue and because Lucia has broken the ‘rules’ of balance her photo demonstrates it and makes the viewer think about it. Working with or against the principles of design can both bring power to your images.”
