Susan says, “Before anyone can endorse your idea, they have to understand it. Many ideas are complicated and hard to grasp. It’s hard to imagine, but by selecting the right picture any idea, no matter how complex, can come into focus. I love these leaves. They are not real leaves, of course, but they are so nearly real that I get “the leaf idea” right away. But this photograph has an added message that makes it a useful representation of a more complex idea. Are these leaves melting? Yes, they are in this surreal, but real photograph. What kind of complex ideas could be expressed by these melting leaves…”

Lucia says, “I call this photo ‘leaf impressions’. It’s one of my favorites from this year. I love the monochromatic canvas. It makes the already blurry images even more ethereal. And to think that not long before this moment, the crisp fallen leaves were full of color. Then the autumn rains smeared the decaying leaves and tattooed them onto the cement. Now they look like silhouettes against a speckled curtain.”
