One person’s actions can send others on a journey of introspection.

Susan says, “We didn’t have much of a winter here in Portland. Of course we had the usual downpours and our share of endless cloudy days, but we had no snow to speak of. Someone has taken upon themselves to correct that by creating a tiny snowstorm of four crocheted snowflakes. Isn’t this is a great example of pitching in, of doing what you can to help? These flakes will always be in the process of falling and will always retain their crystalline shapes. Each is unique just like real snowflakes. But unlike real flakes, had there been any, they haven’t melted into the river or piled up on one another and congealed into a shapeless mass. It speaks well of our city, doesn’t it, that this little personal effort is respected, allowed to flourish, and left unharmed? What makes a community but the individuals in all their uniqueness who, left to their own devices, create a wonderful world to live in.”

Lucia says, “When I made this photo I had no idea of what it could evoke. I was attracted to the delicacy of the snowflakes as they hung on the steel railing, itself an elegant design. In some ways the action of placing these four snowflakes on the bridge railing seemed odd and somewhat funny. Why would someone do such a thing? Yet I was moved to capture it. But why? I think Susan expressed the essence of what seized my imagination. I liked that someone had the moxie to hang their tiny pieces of art on a public site. I was glad that no one had removed it. I thought it showed a respect for that person’s freedom of expression. And I wondered how many people stopped to ponder the meaning of this tiny display. It goes to show that even a a small gesture can evoke thoughtful musings.”
