You may recall, I use Foto Friday to remind you to slow down and enjoy the world around you. And I like to give you something fun, beautiful, funny, or light-hearted to see at the end of the work-week. I think this photo does both.

Colorful Northern Flicker surrounded by stark white of winter snow.

On the last snow day in Portland, I took every chance I could to peek out my windows to watch birds stopping by my feeders to grab an easy meal, while I grabbed photos of them. I saw many scenes of birds swooping here and there, landing to take a break, or to eat at a feeder. Although, I wasn’t actually out in it, just watching the birds’ activity made me feel a close bond with nature. I’m usually aware of backyard bird activity that goes on around my house on a daily basis. But on this day I noticed much more activity than usual. It was obvious that the birds needed to eat a lot more to survive. I’m sure finding food in the snow is no easy task. So they were busy. Also, I saw how they needed to fluffed-up their feathers to stay warm, making the little ones looked very puffy.

Shot of the Day

Oh my, then I saw the one pictured here. There it is, I thought, the shot of the day. This young Northern Flicker landed just right. His magnificent colors were framed by the stark whiteness of winter. What a prefect moment! I knew my time was limited, that he’d move on within seconds. I had to hurry, yet move slowly enough to frame the shot. Luckily, he stayed long enough for me to grab my camera and focus. And now I’m able to share this with you. I hope it gives you the incentive to look around you and enjoy the wonders of nature. There’s a whole world out there with a lot going on. All you have to do is slow down a bit and keep your eyes open.
