Perspective is how we look at things. This photo presents a puzzle. How you look at it makes all the difference.
Sometimes it’s fun to create a photo that makes you wonder what you’re seeing. Here, it’s not clear if the reeds are a silhouette or a shadow. Is the perspective from the down low to the ground shooting into the light? Is it looking at a shadow on a wall? In reality, it’s none of these. The perspective is from above looking straight down onto a shadow of the reeds on the sidewalk.
More that a Puzzle in Perspective
I especially like the texture throughout the frame. The shadow of the reeds has taken on the roughness of the sidewalk causing them to blur by bleeding into the pitted surface. The colors are very subtle – almost black and white. And there’s not much depth, as if the black reeds were painted on to a canvas. All of these – the puzzle of perspective, the texture, the colors – have come together to create an interesting abstract. It goes to show, when making photos don’t only look at what’s in front of you. Look all around, up, down and behind you. You never know what you’ll find.
