This photo shows a microcosm of the effects of climate change.

Spider web filled with ash from forest fires is a microcosm of climate change.

The ash was falling like light snow, the leaves on the trees were covered with it, and the morning light had an eerie yellow cast. The quiet was deafening. Usually mornings are filled with a cacophony of bird songs, but there was not even one bird to be heard or seen. I imaged they sensed danger and flew off to a safer area, at least I hoped they did. All of this was fall out from the forest fires on the west coast of the U.S.

Microcosm of Effects of Climate Change as Seen from a Spider’s Point of VIew

The horror was to the east of Portland with fires roaring, destroying beautiful areas of lush green forest. Here in my yard the effects were evident on the smallest level. When I first saw this spider web, I wasn’t’ sure what I was seeing. Then I realized, this web, intended to capture food for this spider was full of ash. I wondered, did her instincts become confused as her web filled with ash? It really brought home the responsibility we have to take care of the environment because of the repercussions our carelessness has even on the smallest of creatures.
