Last Foto Friday I talked about framing a scene and sitting patiently while waiting for the right moment. The week before I talked about the luck of being in the right place at the right time. This week is about a combination of both.

Duck flapping it's wings above water.

Be Observant and Take Note

I had been quietly watching a group of ducks floating around a pond. I noticed that every once in a while a duck would duck (no pun intended) its head in the water and move its body in an undulating fashion. Then it would rise above and flap its wings as if shaking off the water. What a cool action to capture, I thought. So I watched and waited as many ducks floated around and performed this under/above water action. Although this behavior seemed random, there was a pattern to the actual movement. There were several seconds of underwater action before the above water flapping began. So I knew that I had time to focus once I saw the one I wanted. Then a duck floating into a prefect spot in the sunlight started his underwater dance. I calmly focused on him and waited for him to start flapping his wings above water. I never found out why ducks behave this way. But by being observant, I noticed a pattern to their behavior, which made it possible for me to capture the duck in action.
