Every team has a leader. Here is the captain of one of Portland’s Dragon Boats, relishing the moment.
Susan says, “The joy of this moment is on the face of this Dragon Boat captain. Like all captains she has the advantage of seeing the big picture. High above the paddlers, she can feel the strength of her crew, shepherd them through the race with encouragement and guidance where it is needed and finally celebrate with them at the finish line. Not everyone can experience the high she has been given by her paddlers, but, look at her face. If you’ve never had her experience first hand, you can vicariously feel her pride, pleasure and satisfaction. Here is yet another opportunity given us by the Dragon Boats to find a story worth sharing: the pleasure and joy of leadership.”
Lucia says, “Our friend, Vickie, is one of the paddlers on this boat. She told me that she doesn’t look up while they’re racing. She just listens to the call of the leader and watches the paddle ahead of her to keep in rhythm. Although, she has to keep her head down while in the midst of the race, she feels the thrill of winning and teamwork. Susan is right, the captain sees the big picture and feels the high of leading her crew to victory. But the whole team wins the race and the exhilaration is felt by all.”
