What is conveyed in this photograph? In a typical setting for fishing, snoozing or sunning there is nothing restful or relaxed about this young woman sitting on the pier.
Susan says, “She is sitting very still amidst the rippling, ruffled blue-back water and the sometimes-wet and sometimes-dry surface of the pier. She is very small in the photo, pushed almost to the corner, and yet she holds her own. She is the focus and the purpose of the photograph. This photograph speaks about focus, inwardness, stillness, meditation, solitude. All these abstractions are brought alive in this photo.”
Lucia says, “This is one of my favorite things to photograph – a small figure in a large negative space. Susan described this scene very well. Yes, the woman on the pier does hold her own. She’s even the anchor to the composition. She sits in the glow of the setting sun, as if lit by a spotlight on a stage. There are many things I love about this scene, especially its simplicity. I get a sense of peaceful calm from this setting. Don’t you?”
