This photo offers a triple whammy to enhance a presentation – storytelling, design, and seeing ideas. Susan gives the details.
Yet another one of Lucia’s beautifully composed photos that offers ideas about storytelling, design, and illustrating abstract ideas. As an example of great design, see how the slightly blurred background, black with strong vertical lines, sets off the main subject with it’s lighter colors and more delicate, rounder shape. Lucia has used the contrasting color of the can against the sooty black to direct the viewer’s eye and to make certain that her chosen subject stands out from the background. However, the strong vertical line of the spout of the battered and chipped oil can leads us out to the edge of the photo. This unusual choice which breaks the standard design conventions actually makes the photo stronger. As for story, this photo is a natural prompt to talk about historic working conditions where grit and grease were ever present components and which are in contrast to the “clean room” mentality of today. Other presenters might use this photo to bring abstract ideas to life; for example, to lead discussions about ways of becoming unstuck, being helpful, understanding the situation of others using lubrication from a metaphoric oil can. This is a beautiful photograph that could serve a presenter in many ways.
